Leaving church on Sunday morning

The show lay thick around Holy Trinity on Sunday morning and several people were unable to get to church. Joanna and Alan Smith however were undaunted. Despite having only left hospital a week before, after major surgery,  Joanna donned stout boots and a serious fur hat and with Alan set off through the snow. The service was a particularly lovely one, enhanced by the sense that we had made an effort to get there which somehow added to its importance.

Church Schools Festival at Rochester Cathedral: June 17 2011

The Church Schools Festival is an annual event for year 6 pupils, teachers and clergy in Church Schools in the Rochester diocese. This year, we were celebrating 200 years of Church Schools. The theme of the day this year was ‘Firm Foundations’.

In the morning, children practised their contribution to the afternoon service and the hymns which were to be sung. They were also given guides to the cathedral. Hever school children enjoyed dressing up as monks and being told a little about a monk’s life.

The service began just after 1pm, with schools contributing worship songs and dances, dramatisations from the Bible and prayers at different points in the service. Each school had brought a ‘Book of memories’ which they exchanged with another school.

Hever children sang ‘Faithful One’ and accompanied their singing with deaf sign language to make the meaning clearer.

There was  Holy Communion and a blessing and Hever was lucky to be ‘served’ by its very own rector, Reverend Jane Weeks.

Children and adults alike had a very blessed time and hopefully Hever’s ‘leavers’, our year 6 children, will retain a find memory of that day.

My first CD for flute and organ.

I have just released my first CD in collaboration with organist Chris Lockyer:

Reawakening: Original Works for Flute and Organ

This compilation showcases works composed exclusively for the western concert flute family and classical pipe organ from 1800 to date, and features many premier recordings, including those performed from original manuscripts.

The CD comprises twenty three tracks, and is accompanied by a fully illustrated fifty six page booklet. In addition to my study of the repertoire, I have also created a website, which will be updated as my research continues to unfold.

The CD is priced at £15, and can be purchased from me directly.

Here is a sample track from the CD, taken from Fourteen Liturgical Meditations by Jacques Berthier.

I would like to express my sincere thanks and deepest gratitude to all those within the Benefice who have so very generously contributed to my studies, which has inevitably enabled me to study this area in greater depth and to produce my first CD!

Deanery service at Four Elms for Ascension day

Photo

Charles Talbot conducted a choir of 24 drawn from choirs from our deanery for a lovely ascension day service at Four Elms on Thursday. It was great to sing in a bigger choir and to meet to share and compare singing experiences.
